![]() ![]() Helldivers is a game that should be played with friends, as the single player can get very overwhelming and dull when you're standing around by yourself waiting for an anti-air platform to activate or some other mission. You will be crushed under the steel boat of peace! The enemy types have some variety, especially later when bigger enemies start showing up, but sadly with just three races you'll be seeing a lot of the same creatures again and again. This is probably to allow for the randomly generated levels but when there are only three planet types it gets very boring. It doesn't help that the games graphic and sound are bland and uninteresting. There appears to be a lot of different missions but it mostly boils down to run to this area, punch in a code, wait for a bar to fill while fighting off enemies, rinse and repeat. This all makes it sound like I really liked Helldivers but to be honest despite all the cool ideas and tonnes of content, I found the core gameplay too basic and much too repetitive. It a simple idea but a great tension building feature. It sounds easy but as the game progresses you will need to enter longer codes and sometimes you'll need to enter them multiple times. You need to type these in to call for stratagen drops or to turn on a planetary comm tower for example. When activating these a button combination comes up on screen, similar to an old school cheat code entry, consisting of direction buttons. Did I mention this game has friendly fire that cannot be turned off? Just try not to hit you friend with a spray of bullets when you're surrounded by a couple of dozen alien bugs or killer cyborgs.Īnother cool feature of Helldivers is the way you activate your stratagens and complete certain mission objectives. Playing single player requires a much more stealthy approach while multiplayer will need you to work as a team to survive. Helldivers is also a difficult game, you will be swarmed by relentless enemies, who call in backup whenever you get spotted. Helldivers can be played solo or with up to four players or NPCs, with both options requiring a very different play style. Later in the game you even get access to vehicles, such as tanks and mech suits which can lead to some chaotic multiplayer missions. Picking the right combination of weapons and stratagens before each jump is essential to making it through the games tougher missions. Like the weapons, strategen can be upgraded. They range from the ability to deploy sentry turrets, to ordering a carpet bomb or tactical nuke. These are special equipment with limited uses that can help turn the tide of battle. To back up your weapons you also get to choose four stratagens to bring into combat. To help you in this there is an armoury of unlockable weapons and upgrades to improve your fire power and abilities. You land on planets and rip through swarms of enemies while completing secondary objectives like activating missile silos and protecting bases. Helldivers at its core is a third person, squad based, twin stick shooter. You play as a Helldiver, an elite soldier that is dropped into the middle of enemy territory to carry out a range of dangerous missions either by yourself or on as part of a team. ![]() ![]() In a pretty humorous opening propaganda recruitment video you are shown that the "heroic" humans are actually invading other worlds and wiping out any alien race that stands in their way of expansion, think Warhammer 40K meets Starship Troopers. Helldivers is set in the far future where humanity has spread across the universe in search of new races and obtain resources to maintain their continued growth. This week I had the chance to play through the game and find out if it makes the landing successfully or burns up on re-entry. Helldivers is a new indie game by Arrowhead Game Studios exclusive to PS4 and has already garnered quite a lot of positive press from its previews.
